Research

For the first page, i made a cover for this portfolio. It include several main elements of my topic, women in a red dress, dream core pictures and playground slides.

I did a few pages of moodboards about dream core images, trying to get people to feel the vibe it was expressing. I’ll be using some of the textures and colours, as most of the dreamcore-style images are blurry, so I’ll probably use mohair for my fabric samples. Also since the pictures are nostalgia and have lots of pixels, I might add some beads to the fabric.

While I was researching, I came across a Hitchcock movie called Marnie, the protagonist of which also became afraid of red after a tragic childhood experience. Whenever she saw something red and was startled, Hitchcock would put a red filter on the screen. This gave me some inspiration. Maybe I can also add a red filter to my muse’s head when I draw the final lineup.

I also researched a little about brain waves. I found that when people are startled, their brain waves are beta waves. I think I can use the up and down lines in the draping of the silhouette design.

At the same time, I also started my first place visit. When I was still thinking about where to go, I suddenly remembered that every time I went to a friend’s house, I would pass an amusement park, and there were some similarities to the amusement park where my bad childhood memories happened, so I decided to go there for some inspiration. I was intrigued by the racks in that amusement park for people to climb on because the arrangement of each hemp rope looked orderly, but the way the ropes crossed was different when we looked at them from different angles. I will use this element in my fabrics.

On our first class back on campus, when Carlyn looked at my sketchbook, she said that the climbing rack looked like a spider web and maybe I could do some research about that. I noticed that Louise Bourgeois was recently presenting an exhibition called The Woven Child at Southbank Centre, which featured spider installations, so I bought the ticket immediately and decided to check it out the next day.

In this exhibition, I also saw the works of this series, and I think the mesh material is very similar to the material of Rana’s previous work, dappled Light, which is another exhibition I visited.

I extracted the shape of the grid from it and found a paper with this structure. I also put it in my fabric sample.
